Roving Reporters Cricket Club Roving Reporters v Broxbourne on Sun 13 May 2012 at 2pm
Roving Reporters Cricket Club Lost by 40 runs

Match report RRs succumbed to a first defeat of the 2012 season against Broxbourne at Mill Lane. Having agreed the toss, Broxbourne went out to bat first as the evergreen Delboy and the 'overpriced' Dave Simmons dusted off their bowling actions for the new season. The Broxbourne openers started steadily with the odd flash of aggression as the opening bowlers kept things tight. Wickets then began to fall as first the dangerous looking Vann was yorked by Simmo for 20, soon followed by Pedler bowled by the wily Weist for 12. After Simmo took a second, CJ picked up a wicket with his first ball - having walked back disconsolately to the refuge of pavilion, the batsman must have been galled to see CJ then deliver three dreadful wides, one of which pitched on the next strip and left Dyer prostrate on the turf. The wickets continued to tumble as self-heralded northern swing bowler John Lewis took three quick wickets, despite his famously uncomfortable length largely pitching outside the leg stump. It was then the turn of Aussie spin king Steve Watson to open his account for the season - bowling with verve and accuracy, Stevo snaffled two wickets before Simmo returned with another yorker for a third wicket. Honourable mentions in the field go to the tireless Tony Rymer, and Martin Dyer for keeping very tidily on his return from injury.

In confident mood following tea, Smith and Rymer strapped on the pads to see us off to a good start. Unfortunately this good start did not ensue - tight bowling and a difficult pitch made batting tricky as Rymer, Jenkins junior, Jenkins senior and The 'self styled' Cobra fell in quick succession. Then came some much needed hope - recently wedded captain Dave Rock and Jones (famed for his early season form) joined each other at the crease and began to steadily increase the scoring rate with a partnership of 45. However, once Rock fell stumped off the metronomic Vann, Simmo entered the fray and having yorked two batsman with his own bowling, succeeded in only yorking himself second ball. With the run rate escalating, the lower order succumbed valiantly whilst trying to hit out, as the RRs challenge faded under the late evening sunshine.

Despite a muted dressing room after the game, The Cobra reignited the conversation with some teasing trivia questions as former skipper and fanatical Essex fan JJ eventually located his keys, wallet and phone - in Flamstead. Anyway role on game 2......
