Roving Reporters Cricket Club Roving Reporters v Chipperfield Clarendon on Sun 20 May 2012 at 2pm
Roving Reporters Cricket Club Won by 119 runs
Match report
To describe the conditions we encountered at Chipperfield as not ideal for cricket would be an understatement - with leaden grey skies and a cold wind the team was looking apprehensive until.......the self named 'Cobra' arrived complete with new club vests featuring new club logo - safe to say Scooby had found his market, with players old and young fighting tooth and nail for a warming vest.
Anyhow onto the match......Hertfordshire born captain Rogan went out to toss up and confidently strode back into the dressing room to announce in his own inimitable East Hertfordshire style "we're batting". Both D & T Simmons were sent out to open up and started rather sedately until Cheater Tom, having blocked a few balls, could resist no more and launched the opening bowler over long on for six. With Cheater struggling to contain his desire to dispatch all bowling either to or over the boundary, the other Simmo was left to try and see off the accurate Gurney from the pavilion end. Cheater departed bowled for 32 which brought Pete Jenkins to the wicket - however, after comfortably dealing with any bowling sent down to him, Pete inexplicably saw a quick single despite the ball bouncing cleanly into first slip's hands - Simmo called no and Pete made his way back to the warmth of the pavilion. Then Scooby made his way to the wicket.......and made his way back to the pavilion again - caught behind first ball. The Rock then made his way out to join Simmo - batting steadily at first they began to up the scoring rate until 'T-shirt tan' Simmo (becoming ever more frustrated at his inability to reach the boundary) somehow found himself near three figures - having been dropped on 96, Simmo then made his way to 104 until he was nonchalently pouched on the boundary to conclude a partnership of 113 with Rock. By this point the Rockster could smell a century of his own as his shot making became ever more brutal - with great support from Terry 'the Gunslinger' Miles, Rocky made it to 100 with a couple of balls of the innings to spare. With a formidable total of 260, the team went into "the best tea of the season" (Wiggins, 2012) full of confidence.
With more jumpers being sported than anyone had ever seen previously, the Reporters stepped out onto the field wondering who would open the bowling - up step Aussie spin tyro Steve Watson (who considered the conditions to be positively numbing), and Hertfordshire trundler and repressed Kent CCC fan (and part time Tim Bresnan/Rafael Ibanez impersonator) John Rogan. Watson and Rogan bowled superbly in tandem, with the flight and turn of Watson complementing the pace and hostility of Rogan. They shared the first seven wickets, four for Rogan and three for Watson, and these included three catches for 'buckets' Rock and the safe pair of hands of Craig Simmons at first slip. With the win looking inevitable and having delivered a David Masters-esque performance with the ball himself, Rogan opted for the guile of Terry Miles and the frustratingly accurate Simmons senior to try and see off the remaining batsmen. Despite both bowling well, Simmons in particular picking up his customary maidens; neither could dislodge the increasingly aggressive Durrant who batted very well for his 91. With the ball becoming increasingly difficult to pick out against the darkening skies it took a run out to end Durrant's powerful knock and thus the expensive four over spell of RRs no.2 'leg spinner' CJ.
With the win secured it was time for some socialising, at which point joint captains Rock and Rogan decided it would be a good idea to divulge some dressing room secrets to some of our angelic, long suffering female supporters -dreadful! Roll on some hotter weather - please - particularly bearing in mind the Cobra's threat to wear a full lycra suit under his whites if it is that cold again!
