Match report
After another game bit the dust last week due to the weather RR’s were finally back in action against Hertford CC. After a heavy night of rain in Hertford the game was in doubt but due to the hard work of Eric Riddle and the ground staff the pitch and outfield was playable.
RR’s won the toss and elected to field on a wicket that was wet and spongy and would hopefully assistance to RR’s opening bowlers Del Boy and Jamie H. Hertford CC got off to a positive start (39 for 0 off 10) on a wicket, which would prove difficult to score on as the day progressed. RR’s then started to fight back with opening bowler Del Boy picking up three quick wickets trapping Hillary LBW with the score on 46, Stokes with the score on 48 and an athletic caught and bowled to claim his third victim.
The two first change bowlers Scooby and the Sliver Fox – aka Stuart Wiggins bowled with increased accuracy as they both became difficult to score of and both finished with respectable figures yet with no wickets to show for there efforts.
A change in bowling was to bring RR’s a break though. Young spin bowler Jake ‘two pound’ Pike dismissed opener Riddle for 50 and hard hitting Anderson for 24. With the score now 119 for 5 of 41 overs and tea fast approaching the introducing of Jenkins was need to open the game up. Some hard hitting from Kent towards the end of the innings brought Hertford a final total of 171 for 6 of 51 overs.
So a fine tea and plates of sandwiches as big as Everest RR’s faced a target of 172 to win with 20 overs from half past 6.
Rymer and Jenkins were to open the batting. The early lost of Rymer dragging on for a duck brought Rowlands to the crease who decided to copy the outgoing batsman by dragging on himself. So with the score 5/2 RR’s need to recuperate and re build there innings. Rock and Jenkins started slowly and patiently. A close scare for Rock early in his innings as Jenkins called him through for a ludacris single could have proved costly for RR's.
Drinks at half past 6, RR’s were 49 for 2 of 24 overs with the Hertford opening bowlers frustrating Rock and Jenkins. RR’s need a 123 off 20 with 8 wickets in the hutch. Jenkins was trapped LBW for 17 (off 75 balls) with the score on 64. New dad Chris Jones entered the crease and was soon on his way back as he was caught in the covers for 2. RR’s required 100 of 14 with the run rate creeping up. Pike and Rock tried to accelerate but were becoming increasing frustrated with the fields being set, at one point 8 fielders were on the boundary. Rock brought up his 50 off 84 balls. The game was now starting to filter to a disappointing end which hand potential to blossom into an exciting game. Pike was out in the 40th over with 4 overs left, still 5 wickets in hand but yet a massive 48 runs required.
With the fielders still out and the opening bowler brought back into the attack the game dwindled into a draw. A hard-hitting penultimate over from Rock (86n/o) – 17 off it proved to late with RR’s finishing on 155 – 17 runs short of their target.
