The Man in the Shorts
On a day that started as a bright summers afternoon finished in a winter downpour resulting in the game being abandoned. RR’s won the toss and elected to bat on a pitch, which represented a garage rooftop covered in moss. RR’s opening pair of Dave Simmons and Stuart Wiggins found the pitch slow and difficult to score on as both left arm over opening bowlers bowled a tight and tidy line. Stuart Wiggins playing the role as Michael Atherton took 10 balls to get off the mark proving how difficult the pitch was. Simmons tried to take the attack to the bowlers and was caught and bowled for 7 with the score on 11 of 7 overs. This brought the inform Rock to the crease who in true Geoffrey Boycott fashion showed a solid defence and was not willing to give his wicket away. It took Rock 14 balls to get off the mark with a missed time drive to the ‘man in the shorts’ would be the talk off the day. Rocky and Wiggy struggled to keep the scoreboard ticking over as there was the odd explosive shot from Rock and the occasional prod from Wiggy. The game was soon to change as in the 19th over and runs hard to come by Rock and Wiggy took a single to the ‘man in the shorts’ where after a series of misfields he picked the ball up cleanly and with one stump to aim at did so leaving Wiggy short of his crease and run out for 12 off 55 balls. RR’s were now in trouble wit the score 37 for 2 off 19 overs. Former skipper JJ came to the wicket and also found the bowling hard to comes to turn with as the gentle of spin of first change bowler Hones proved to good as he was trapped LBW for a 9 ball duck, RR’s were now 61 for 3 (a third wicket partnership of 24). Jake Pike now entered the crease and batted with maturity as RR’s looked to push towards a respectable score a few hefty blows from Rock brought up his 50 off 63 balls. The game was soon to change again by the ‘man in the shorts’ firstly he dropped Jake after he was presented a straightforward chance at square leg. Then off the last ball of Hones spell Rock hit the ball flat and hard to deep square leg were the ‘man in the shorts’ held a good catch to dismiss Rock for 61. The score was now 104 off 31 overs and a target of 150 looked a long way off. Paul Smith came to the crease after a heavy night out on the town. Scooby batted positively and with intent. Jake was approaching his personal best RR’s score but attempted to carve the ball over midwicket and was clean bowled for fine 31 in the 39th over. Scooby was caught in the final over for 20 and Steve Watson was run out for 4 taking RR’s final total up to 144.
With the weather starting to change and the dark clouds circling the common it was only a matter of time before there was a heavy down pour. After a tea the resembled a teddy bears picnic in the woods. RR’s took to the field know nothing less that a excellent fielding display was required. Derek opened the bowling and managed to get the ball to swing and move of the pitch, as he proved difficult to score off. A three over burst from Steve Watson proved unsuccessful and change in bowling was to bring RR’s first wicket as John ‘Waitrose’ Lewis bowled a bowl that was flicked over midwicket only for Rocky to take a diving one handed catch over his shoulder. The following over Derek picked up his first wicket to remove Monken Hadley’s number 3 for a golden duck. As the clouds became darker an rain prominent Monken Hadley began to free there arms sending the ball between gaps to the leg side boundary. As the rain finally came and Hadley on 46 for 2 off 14 overs both captains sensibly decided that the game was not going to be continued therefore the weather winning another fixture.
