Match report RRs began the 2011 season with a record-breaking run-chase to defeat Hertingfordbury for the first time in a decade.
At the toss presided over by RRs legend and Hertingfordbury League umpire John "Conga" Rymer, our hosts opted to bat first in unseasonably warm conditions, but were restricted by some tight bowling from Dave Simmons and Tom Rowlands. First change pair Dave Rock and Tom Simmons kept the pressure on and aided by a stunning slip-catch by Captain JJ to remove the 'Bury's dangerman, the home side limped to 60-4 from the first 15 overs. The next 25 overs were more productive, however, with some good late hitting setting RRs a challenging 223 to win. Tom Simmons and Steve "Jags" Watson finished with 2 wickets apiece.
The RRS reply got off to a flying start with openers Wiggy and Popeye putting on 95. Both would pass 50 before losing their bottle, leaving the match-winning innings to be provided by Rocky who finished on an entertaining 67 not out. Albert Bitici provided the shot of the day, wife Amy being so excited by his stunning lofted on-drive that she almost went into labour, with RRs reaching their target for the loss of just the three wickets with more than four overs left, our highest ever batting total on the first day of a season.
