Roving Reporters Cricket Club Won by 1 run

Match report The ‘END’ is near.

After last years game was called off due to the weather RR’s made their debut at Potten End.

With cloudy conditions RR’s won the toss and opted to bat on a pitch, which seemed to be low and offer assistance to the bowlers.

RR’s pair opened with Smith and Wiggins and both struggled to come to terms with the new ball swinging around and keeping low. Both were bowled with the score on 22 and 27. Pete Jenkins and Tom Rowlands started to steady the ship before Tom was clean bowled with the score on 46 Dave Simmons soon come and wet. RR’s were now in trouble at 48/4.

Pete and Rocky began to restore stability to the innings before PJ was victim to another seasonal ‘Rock Run Out’ (Rocky now having run out three of the four Jenkins family Albert, Pete, Rogie just leaving him JJ for the full set).

Rocky looked scratchy at the crease and survived a few balls keeping low and chips between fielders. He soon began to find his feet and began working the ball into the gaps and a solid partnership began to build between him and Terry Miles. With 11 overs to go and the score on 83 Terry looked accelerate the score but was caught in the deep. Derek swung from the hip and was bowled for a duck and RR’s were now back in trouble and look like they were to be bowled out without using their full 40 overs.

Pete Drury (21*) and Rocky now had to bat 10 overs to look to get RR’s a respectable total. Patience batting from Rock and some power hitting from Pete kept the scoreboard ticking over. As the overs were counting down both batters started to put there foot down and calculated risks were being taken to hopefully achieve a reasonable total. Rocky brought up his 50 in the 39 over with a cover drive 4 and was caught in the deep very next ball. This ended a valuable 8-wicket partnership of 60 runs with Pete finishing 21*.

So RR’s set Potten End 152 curtsey of 27 extras.

RR’s opened with Miles and Del Boy who both picked up and early wicket apiece leaving Potten 13 for 2 off 5 overs. Potten began to take the game to RR’s with opener Raeburn hitting several quick boundaries before attempting one to many as vintage wicket keeper Dyer stumped him for 45. 51 off 14 RR’s needed up their game if they were to stand any chance of wining the game.

A bowling change from both ends brought Scooby and Drury who both steamed the flow of boundaries but the scoreboard was still turning over and Potten were in control as the pitch seemed to be drying out. A partnership break was need therefore skipper Rock throw the ball to Aussie Spin King Shane Watson for inspiration. In his first over he managed to produce a ball good enough to get out any batsman – a juicy full toss which was hit to Terry Miles at square leg who held onto the catch Potten were now 87 for 4 off 23 overs – but victory till in Potten’s sight.

Changes to RR’s bowling attack were more frequent than a London tube as RR’s were determined not to let Potten settle. Another partnership began to develop until Scooby bowled B. Lee – not Brett for 33. Potten now 119 for 5. This soon became 122 for 6 and in the space of 12 balls RR’s hand claimed two wickets leaving Potten 127 for 8 and in deep trouble. Then entered young bowler Hart (who bowled extremely well during his 4 overs). RR’s were now looking to rap this game up and in the space of three overs the table had turned in their favor. However Hart had different ideas. He batted with maturity and hit a quick fire 12 before he was bowled for 12 with the score on 147 bring the game to an exiting end.

Potten now require 5 from the final over – yet which bowler would Rock turn to. He throw the ball to Pete, then took it back off him, then throw it back. This was now getting confusing to who was going to bowl. So it was Pete.

An early run two took the score to 149 and then two singles off two balls took the score up to 151 with two balls to go. Cook was on strike and had been hitting the ball well Potten needed 1 to tie and 2 to win. A full bowl was attempted to be hit over cow but was it straight… Yes it was and Cook was bowled meaning RR’s had one buy 1 wicket with one ball to spare.

A fine overall team performance in an exciting game brought captain Rock his maiden RR’s victory.
