Match report County Over Hall RR’s

On a day when England face Italy in the ¼ final of the Euros the start was brought forward and 1 hour to ensure that the game finished on time. RR’s lost the toss and County Hall had no hesitation in batting first and a good wicket.

RR’s attacked was spearhead by pace bowlers Rowlands and Waitrose who both bowled well on a flat slow track. Waitrose picked up a bargain wicket as he managed to nip the ball though the openers guard and his opening partner followed shortly as he was bowled by the pure pace of Rowlands who send the leg stump flying out the ground. This brought ‘Fireman Sam’ to the crease and the RR’s fielders started to pray that the ball would not be hit in their direction. After a few brut force shots by ‘The Hulk’ David Simmons managed to get a ball to nip away and catch the outside edge and was held by Pike behind the stumps. This was discussed in the bar afterwards and ‘Andre the Giant’ believed to have got a beauty, in true fairness it was a rank ball that should have been hit for four – but I didn’t have the ball to tell him that. With County Hall 80 / 3 at drinks 200 seemed the target. 10 tight overs off bowling meant County Hall were 104/4 with 10 overs to go and this target looked a long way off. 1st XI club captain Stevenson kept the scoreboard turning and few late wickets meant that County Hall finished on 170 for 6 off their 40 overs.

RR’s got off to a solid start with King Cobra and Tony Rymer both looking comfortable at the crease. Tony was dismissed in the 14 over with score on 46 with inform batsman Simmons coming to the crease. The score was still on 46 as Dave hit a full toss straight cover and was now on his way back. This brought skipper Rock to the crease who settled into quickly but found scoring frustrating. 64 for 2 and drinks meant 107 to win off two with 8 wickets in hand. With 10 overs to go Rock and Cobra were both at the crease needing 60 to win 1 a ball. This meant a change in to bowling attack and the ball was thrown to ‘Arnold Schwarzenegger’. The King was now backing away as far as Bengo and the runs were becoming more and more hard to score. A miss communication between Rock and Cobra during a Run meant Rock (38) was run out by a direct hit and the game was now starting to slip away, 120 for 3 off 34 50 runs still required.

The King was approaching his 50 when he herded the price of a jug and decided to shoulder arms to a straight ball on 49 in the penultimate over. With Rowlands and Pike now at the and some quickly running between the wickets meant RR’s finished on 160 for 5 10 runs short but with still 5 wickets in hand.

On a positive note England lost which meant we weren’t going to get embarrassed by the Germans and the BBQ was first class with King Cobra setting a new record off 5 Burgers and 7 Sausages.
